Cultivating Wisdom Conversation: Vanessa S. King and Julian Powe

Our series of brief conversations and blog posts continues, exploring the notion of wisdom in the 2020s!

Hosted by the Primrose Hill Golden Civilisation Conversation community,  we have taken the following motif to guide our exploration:

 ‘What might we ask most of our wisdom in these challenging times? As individuals, as families, as communities, as organisations, as society more broadly?’

Please join us for Vanessa King’s “Wisdom of Science of Well-Being,” her exposition of the science of well-being, and her challenge and invitation to embrace this evidence both in the conduct of our individual lives and in reimagining our surrounding worlds of work, community and politics. It is well worth – indeed really important! – to listen to Vanessa on this topic.

Vanessa is a leading international light in the movement for well-being: Board member at Action for Happiness; author of The Ten Keys to Happier Living and co-author of the forthcoming Creating the World We Want to Live In - Positive Psychology for a Brighter Future; and a regular international speaker on the topic (indeed, do watch her Tedx Talk, The Ten Keys to Happier Living, as a companion to this conversation!).

 ‘The more we can flourish as human beings, the more the planet can flourish’.

In this conversation we explore:

  • Bringing the science of well-being to bear in ‘helping people be the best they can be, to live the best lives they can – often not at all easy’

  • Above all, ‘psychological sustainability, through the pandemic and beyond, fueling community, innovation, creativity, collaboration’

  • Five key principles from the forthcoming book, all grounded in the science:

  • Connection and consideration;

  • Autonomy;

  • Competence, growth and development;

  • A positive, appreciative focus; and

  • A sense of meaning, being part of something bigger than ourselves…..

  • Supported by core capabilities of open mind, open heart and clear thinking

  • The opportunity to apply these principles as design principles in reimagining our worlds of work, projects, communities – We ignore these principles and core capabilities at our peril’

  • Wise individual living right now – more time and space to consider radical change in this area; reaching out and connecting with others, beyond those whom we love and know well; taking steps to contribute in our wider communities; and implementing concrete action

Very important and very much appreciated Vanessa!

Please do connect with Vanessa at vanessaking@thechangespace.com or vanessa.king@actionforhappiness.org, check out her books and explore www.actionforhappiness.org, a wealth of evidence, ideas and suggestions (indeed wisdom!) await you!

Many thanks to all those listening and do please take care.
